Mrs. Nanette Marie Valkier, age 72 of White Cloud, formerly of Conklin, died Monday, April 30, 2012 in Fremont. She was born Nanette Marie Christian in Muskegon, Michigan the daughter of Jessie (Lobdell) and Ernest Christian on September 12, 1939. She married Gordon Valkier on September 12, 1959 in Coopersville, Michigan. She was an LPN and then a caterer before her retirement. She is survived by her husband Gordon Valkier of White Cloud, her daughters Michelle & Dale Williams of Newaygo, Cynthia & Ray Coronado of Newaygo, Lucinda & Jon Perrin of Coopersville, 6 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, her sister Bonita Schoenborn of Conklin and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM with Funeral services at 1:00 PM at the McKinley Funeral Home Newaygo Chapel on Wednesday, May 2, 2012 with Rev. Valerie Meinhold officiating. On Tuesday, April 24, 2012, Robert Dale Rogers went home to be with his Lord and Savior. Born February 28, 1948, he served in the USMC for 8 years and served two tours in Vietnam.
Bob is survived by his wife Julie, best friend Joyce Rogers, daughter Rita Rogers (Ernie Tuffelmire), son William (Angela) Rogers, son James (Missy) Rogers, daughter Lisa (Tim) Sparks, step son Daniel Arends, step son Blake (Jenna) Arends, as well as 25 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren and 4 brothers.
Funeral Mass will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, April 28, 2012 at the St. Bartholomew Catholic Church in Newaygo. Interment will be in the Newaygo Cemetery with military honors under the auspices of the Newaygo VFW Post #4249. Mr. Raymond M. “Bud” Timmermans, of Grant, Michigan went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ the day before his 90th birthday, Thursday, April 19, 2012 at his home. He was born Raymond Minerd Timmermans in Armour, South Dakota the son of Minnie (Schelhas) and Gerrit John Timmermans on April 20, 1922. He married Frances Grace Furman on November 14, 1997 in Iowa. He was a self employed farmer until his retirement. He was a member of Grant Christian Reformed Church.
He is survived by wife Frances Timmermans, his daughters Audrey & Wayne Thompkins, Rachel Timmermans & Ron Jarboe all of Iowa, his grandsons Andrew Bouma, twins Mathew & Alex Hubers, his step children Marcia Walker of Newaygo, Linda & Curt Butler of Grant, David Furman of Grant, Debra & John Byma of Kent City, Richard Furman of Grant, Ronald & Rhonda Furman of Newaygo, Mary & Mark Brisbin of Grant, Sandra & Kevin Smith of Grant, Michelle & Mike Bent of Comstock Park, Mark Furman of Newaygo, Jeffrey Furman of Grant, 25 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, his sister Lillian Oosterhouse of Fremont, his brothers Albert Timmermans of Jenison, Bill & Lois Timmermans of Grandville, his sister in law Lois Timmermans of Kent City. He was preceded in death by 1 brother & 1 sister.

Mrs. Beverly G. Cook, age 72 of Sand Lake, died Thursday, April 19, 2012 at Metron of Cedar Springs. She was born Beverly Gaye Lord in Grant, the daughter of Tressa (Roe) and Melvin Lord on April 21, 1939. She married Jim Allen Cook on April 15, 1958 in Grant. She was a member of Grant Wesleyan Church and a homemaker all her life.
She is survived by her husband Jim Cook, her daughters Dr. Pamela R. Cook, Koleen R. & Mark Schlatter all of Leo, IN, 4 grandchildren, her sister Carol Jane VeltKamp of Newaygo, her brother Stanley & Coleen Lord of Marion, IN.
There will be a memorial service at Grant Wesleyan Church on Sunday, April 22, 2012 at 3:00 PM. In lieu of flowers please consider donations to the Grant Wesleyan Church Music Department.

Sybil Helen Geisinger was born in Chicago, IL on October 3, 1926 and grew up in Milwaukee, WI. She graduated from Mt. Mary College in Wisconsin. Her first teaching job was at a small Bible school in Zion, IL. Then she pastored a small church in Vicksburg, MI with a co-worker from 1954-57. Then she spent five years as a missionary school teacher in the Himalayan Mountains of India where she taught 7th and 8th grade. In 1962, she attended graduate school at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL. In 1963, she married Lawrence Malone whose children were Barry (21 yrs.), Dick (16), and Geneva (4). Then she taught junior high science, English, and art for 23 years in the Grant Public Schools. Also, during this time, she was an active member of Kent City Baptist Church. She retired from teaching in 1986 and then she and Lawrence spent time as interim missionaries in England, California, and in Australia. After Lawrence’s death in 1995, Sybil moved to Laguna Hills, CA and married Kenneth McComber, Lawrence’s cousin, in April 1996. Ken passed away on November 5, 2003 and after remaining in California for a few years, in September 2010, she moved back to Canton, MI near where her daughter, Geneva, lives. Following a stroke on April 4, she passed away on Wednesday, April 18. She was 85. She is survived by her children Barry & Marie Malone of Grant, Dick & Sue Malone of Wyoming, Geneva & Don Evans of Canton, 7 grandchildren, and 4 great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM from the McKinley Funeral Home Grant on Saturday, April 21, 2012 with Rev.Thomas Dolph officiating. Interment will be in Parkview Cemetery. Visitation will be held the hour before the service on Saturday. Mrs. Shirley Ann Robinson, Age 75 of Newaygo, formerly of Grand Haven, died Tuesday, April 17, 2012 in Fremont. She was born Shirley Ann Thomas in Lowell, Michigan the daughter of Marie Ellen (Bibbler) and John Thomas on September 1, 1936. She married Richard Lee Robinson on June 29, 1955 in Lowell, Michigan. She was a school teacher for Sheldon Pines until her retirement in 1995. She was a member of St. Bartholomew Catholic Church. She is survived by her husband Richard Robinson of Newaygo, her children Richard, Jr. & Roxanne Robinson of McMinnville, OR. Donna Robinson of Topeka, KS, Mari Jo & Ken Umlor of Grant, 9 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, her sister Dorothy & Bill Therso of Pennsylvania, her brother in law Dave & Sue Robinson of Grand Haven and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Opal E. Pickerd, age 80 of Grant, died Monday, April 9, 2012 at her residence in Grant Township. She was born Opal Evelyn Pease in Holton, the daughter of Emma (Pease) and Ezra Jordan on April 7, 1932. She married Jacob Junior Pickerd on March 22, 1958 in Grant. She was a Homemaker all her life and was a member of Grant Wesleyan Church.
She is survived by her husband Jacob Pickerd, her children Karen Throop of Fremont, Deborah & Larry Smith of Kentwood, Timothy & Jan Pickerd, Jake W. & Bridget Pickerd all of Grant, 16 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren,

Mrs. Frances Carol Hoekzema, Age 65 of Newaygo, Michigan died Saturday, April 7, 2012 in Grand Rapids. She was born Frances Carol Vander Ley in Grand Rapids, Michigan the daughter of Esther (Vermeer) and Frank Vander Ley on September 13, 1946. She married David Hoekzema on September 5, 1975 in Grand Rapids. She was a Receptionist and secretary for Gerber Hospital & Grand Rapids Press. She was a member of New Community Church. She is survived by her husband David Hoekzema of Newaygo, her daughters Christine & Alexander Smith, Elizabeth Hoekzema, Andrea Hoekzema all of Grand Rapids, her grandsons Everett and Desmond, her brother Robert & Linda Vander Ley of Jenison, her sister in law Mary & John Hoeksema of Hudsonville and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents Frank & Esther Vander Ley, her son Mark Hoekzema, her brother George Vander Ley. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM at the New Community Church, Newaygo on Friday, April 13, 2012 with Pastor Ben Oliveira officiating. Interment will be in Newaygo Cemetery. Elizabeth Osmun Kuhn, 85, of Reed City, and formerly of Bailey, died on Wednesday, April 4, 2012 in Reed City.
She was born Elizabeth Irene Osmun in Grand Rapids, the daughter of Agnes (Dondono) and Claud Osmun on June 2, 1926. She married Mark E. Kuhn on November 17, 1945 in Grand Rapids; he was a retired Army Lt. Colonel and preceded her in death on January 6, 1989. She was a graduate of Central High School and Davenport Business College. She loved being an officer’s wife and traveled with her husband and children to most of the places where her husband, Mark, was stationed. When Mark retired, they bought property in Bailey. She was a member of St. Bartholomew’s Catholic Church and was active as a singer, lector and catechist; and was a member of the Grant Bible Study group. In her spare time she loved to garden and to sew. She made beautiful quilts.
She is survived by her children, Claudia Kuhn Nichols of Reed City, Marcia Kuhn Hotchkiss of Bailey, Michael D. (Lola) Kuhn of Newaygo and Christopher (Deb) Kuhn of Whitmore Lake; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Claude Osmun of Brooks Lake and Gordon (Ginny) Osmun of Cascade. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lt. Colonel Mark E. Kuhn; and her two brothers, Jack Osmun and Roger Osmun of Grand Rapids; and her grandson Trinity Nichols.
There will be visitation at McKinley Funeral Home in Grant on Monday, April 9 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, April 10, 2012 at 11:00 AM at St. Bartholomew’s Catholic Church in Newaygo. Interment will be at St. Bartholomew’s Catholic Cemetery in Newaygo. Mrs. Judy K. Higgins, age 72 of Grant, passed away Monday, April 2, 2012 at her home in Bridgeton Township. She was born Judith Kay Zufelt in Comstock Park, the daughter of Thelma Bonadean (Eaton) and Elmer Zufelt on September 16, 1939. She married Archie Sherman Higgins on October 5, 1957 in Grant. She was a Homemaker all her life and was affectionately known as the Queen of the Higgins Clan.
She is survived by her husband Archie Higgins, her children Scott & Laurie Higgins of Fremont, Sid & Vicki Higgins of Minnesota, Sheri Higgins, Sheril & Gary Ream all of Grant, her grandchildren Scotty & Myriah, Eric, Jamie, Ian, Shastyn & Ben, Elizabeth, Dutch, Jason, and her great grandchildren Eryn & Deven.
