Mr. Charles H. Crandell, age 82 of Grant, died Monday, February 27, 2012 at Transitional Health Services near Fremont. He was born Charles Henry Crandell in Gaylord, the son of Minnie (Bell) McClintock and James Henry Crandell on September 2, 1929. He married Dolores Jean Blakely in Newberry and she preceded him in death on March 19, 1995. He was a Woodsman.

He is survived by his daughter Patricia Crandell of Gaylord, his 4 grandchildren, his sister Minnie Underwood of Rapid River and his neices and nephews.

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 PM at the Hillside Cemetery, Grant on Wednesday, February 29, 2012.

Catherine MercerCatherine Joan Mercer, 65, of Newaygo, Mich., died Feb. 23, 2012, at home, surrounded by loved ones after a battle with cancer. Catherine loved her Michigan Wolverines, retail therapy and her grandchildren’s french fries and Halloween candy. But most of all, she loved her friends and family. She expressed that love in many ways. Among them: teaching grandchildren how to sew and make cookies, completing income-tax forms for dear ones, and beating her daughter and granddaughters at card games. In her final days, she found the strength to travel to New York to celebrate the first birthday of her youngest granddaughter. Born in Flint, Mich., on Aug. 13, 1946, to Thomas and Madonna Cussans, Catherine graduated from St. Mary’s School in Mt. Morris and the University of Michigan-Flint. She worked as a medical technologist for 32 years at McLaren Regional Medical Center, before retiring in 2001. That year, she moved to Newaygo to be closer to her family. Catherine was preceded in death by her parents, brother Thomas K. Cussans, and stepdaughter Sharon Mercer. She is survived by her husband of 43 years, Terence Mercer; son Bret (Michelle) Mercer; daughter Erin (Todd) Fettig; brothers Kevin (Mary) Cussans and Patrick Cussans; grandchildren Alison and Cadence Mercer-Curtis, Carter and Tatum Fettig, and Sophie and Mackenzie Mercer. The family will receive friends and relatives Monday, March 5, from 1-4 p.m. at Rossell Funeral Home, 307 East Main St., Flushing. A memorial service will follow at 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Make-a-Wish Foundation of Michigan.

Mr. Marvin Jay Hunter, Age 72 of Newaygo, died Saturday, February 25, 2012 in Grand Rapids. He was born Marvin Jay Hunter in Grand Rapids, Michigan the son of Rose (Shoemaker) and Russell Hunter on April 1, 1939. He was a delivery/salesman for Model Coverall Service, Frito Lay, and a driver for Rosendall Disposal in Grand Rapids until his retirement. He was a member of St. Bartholomew Catholic Church. He is survived by his daughter Alisha & Steve Pickerd of Newaygo, his grandchildren Zachariah Hunter, Ashley Pickerd, and Ryan Pickerd, his son Jeff Hunter of Grant, his grandson Marcus Hunter of Hesperia, great granddaughter Lola Hunter,grandson Justin Hunter of Fremont, great grandson Landon Hunter, his sister Rose Mary & Bill Faurot of Sand Lake, his brother Charles & Cheryl Hunter of Luther, several nieces and nephews, and his beloved dog Daisy. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM from the St. Bartholomew Catholic Church in Newaygo on Wednesday, February 29, 2012 with Father Pete Schafer officiating. Mrs. Flossie Clista "Chris" Haisma, Age 67 of White Cloud, died Tuesday, February 21, 2012 in Fremont. She was born Flossie Clista Kinney in Muskegon, Michigan the daughter of Flossie Clista (Hotchkiss) and Arthur Roy Kinney on January 27, 1945. She married Richard Haisma on March 10, 1973 in Ada, Michigan and he preceded her in death on December 4, 2003. She was a Nurse’s Aid at Grand Rapids Veterans Home and Mary Freebed. She was a foster grandparent in Newaygo County. She is survived by her brother Art & Sherry Hotchkiss of Saranac, sisters Hazel & John Deater of Twin Lake, Belle Barden of Lakewood, NY, Dorothy Samuelson of Jamestown, NY, her sister in law Eleanor Kinney of Muskegon, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by her husband Richard Haisma, brother Arthur Kinney, her sisters Harriet Johnson, Millie Parsons and Mae Osborne. Memorial services will be held at 2:00 PM from the River of Life Church, 4860 Holton Road, Twin Lake, on Saturday, February 25, 2012 with Rev. Donald Benedict officiating.

Mrs. Elizabeth Ann Dickey, age 76 of Fremont died Friday, February 17, 2012 in Grand Rapids.   She was born Elizabeth Ann Ussher in South Bend, Indiana the daughter of Geraldine Anna (Willis) and Richard Melville Ussher on February 7, 1936.   She was a Registered Nurse working in area hospitals until her retirement. She was a member of Pine Grove Community Church‑Howard City.      

She is survived by her sister Carol Austin of White Cloud.

Mr. Manuel Contreras, age 64 of Newaygo, died Wednesday, February 15, 2012 in Grand Rapids.   He was born Manuel Contreras in San Antonio, TX the son of Eloise (Tucker) and Manual Contreras, Sr. on January 7, 1948. He married Sylvia Santos Barrera on June 1, 1968 in Defiance, Ohio. He was a Electrician/Operator for Consumers Power until 2005 retiring after 30 years.   He was a member of HOG Group.     

He survived by His wife Sylvia Contreras, his sons David & Kyndra Contreras of White Cloud, Derrick & Angela Contreras of Cedar Springs, Destry Contreras of Grand Rapids, 10 grandchildren1 great grandson, his mother Eloise Contreras of San Antonio, TX, his brother Charlie Contreras of San Antonio, TX, his sister Jacquline Nunez of San Antonio, TX,

Mr. Ivan Leroy Starks, Jr., age 70 of Walkerville, died Tuesday, February 14, 2012 in Hart.   He was born Ivan Leroy Starks, Jr. in Newaygo, the son of Irene Margaret (Wallace) and Ivan Leroy Starks, Sr. on July 22, 1941.   He was employed at  Fred Redinger Christmas Trees and National Fruit until his retirement.        

He is survived by his sister Eileen & Vernon Grabe of Grant, his niece Jennifer & Michael Kelly of Sparta, nephews Henry John & Shannon Grabe of Grant, Saul E. Grabe of Grant, and several great nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held 7‑9 PM Thursday at McKinley Funeral Home in Newaygo.

Marian Jean Penland, age 88 of Newaygo, Michigan  died Tuesday, February 14, 2012 in Mt. Pleasant.   She was born Marian Jean Curtis in Walker Township, the daughter of Margaret (Hoban) and Ranselaer Erastus Curits on March 29, 1923. She married Marvin Penland on September 8, 1951 in Sparta, Michigan and he preceded her in death on March 5, 2005. She was a collector of porcelain chickens and an extensive bell collection.  She was well known for her cakes and sour cream cookies.  She was an avid traveler, seeing all 48 lower states. 

She is survived by her daughter, Patricia Heitman of Mt. Pleasant, daughter, Christine Penland of Mt. Pleasant,son Kenneth Penland of Ferrysburg, daughter, Arlene & Rich Miller of Topeka, KS, granddaughters, Jennifer Heitman, Nicole Miller, grandsons, Travis Heitman, Michael Heitman, Patrick Heitman, brother, Carl Curtis, sister in law, Velma Curtis, sister in law, Jessie Curtis, brother in law, Marshall & Phyllis Penland, sister in law, Jean (Doug Martinez) Penland, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brother, Leo Curtis, sister, Evelyn Stellard, sister, Helen Welmerink, brother, Harold Curtis, brother, Lawrence Curtis, and son in law, John Heitman.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM from the McKinley Newaygo Chapel, Newaygo on Saturday, February 18, 2012 with Pastor Curt Jensen officiating.  Interment will take place in Newaygo Cemetery.   Visitation is from 5-7 PM at the funeral home on Friday, February 17, 2012. Wade Scott Adams, age 44 of, Newaygo, died Monday, February 13, 2012. He was born Wade Scott Adams in Owosso, Michigan the son of Sandra (Apps) and Patrick Adams on July 3, 1967. He was a member of Fremont Church of Christ. He was a member of Toast Masters in Colorado. He was an avid golfer. He participated in Bowtie Billiards League in Sparta. He served in the U.S. Air Force.

Wade is survived by his daughters Sarah Adams of Denver, CO, Emily Adams of Colorado Springs, CO, son Floyd Adams of Colorado Springs, CO, former spouse Theresa Adams of Colorado Springs, CO, mother Sandra & Gary Vincent of Newaygo, father Patrick Adams of Clearwater, FL ,brothers, Joe & Sue Adams of Atlantic, VA, Gary & Debbie Adams of Lapeer, MI, sisters, Theresa Stevens of Severn, MD, Shanna & Brian Gorby of Port. St. Lucie, FL, and many nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Eva J. Van Koevering, age 77 of Grant, a humble woman devoted to her faith, serving her family and friends, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Saturday, February 11, 2012 after a long battle with Alzheimers. She was born Eva Jean Wright in Detroit, the daughter of Minnie (Raymer) and Leon Wright on November 2, 1934. She married Duane Van Koevering on October 11, 1954 in Grant. She was a Food Service Supervisor for Grant Public Schools until retiring after 18 years where the students and staff especially enjoyed her homemade cinnamon rolls and cookies. She was a member of Grant Christian Reformed Church.       

She is survived by her husband of 57 years Duane, children Sherry & Fred Garia of Austin, TX, Michael Van Koevering of Grant, Greg Van Koevering of Champaign, IL, her grandchildren Dan & Cory Van Koevering of Grand Rapids, Kasi Van Koevering, Kristin Van Koevering both of Bailey, Andrew, Rebecca & Kathryn Garia all of Austin, TX, her brothers Jerry Wright of Newaygo, Rex Wright of Baldwin, Bob & Cheryl Wright of Newaygo.  she was preceded in death by her father and mother Leon & Minnie Wright, and stepfather Chester Steadman.

A Celebration Service of Eva’s life will be held at 1:00 PM from the Grant Christian Reformed Church, on Friday, February 17, 2012 with Pastor Adam Nordyke officiating. There will a private family Interment at the Ashland Center Cemetery near Grant.   The family will receive relatives and friends 7‑9 PM Thursday at McKinley Funeral Home in Grant.
