Mr. Louis A. Derwin, age 78 of Newaygo, died Thursday, August 19, 2010 at Spectrum Health-Butterworth Campus in Grand Rapids.   He was born Louis Addison Derwin in Chicago, Illinois the son of Bertha (Miller) and Earl Addison Derwin on April 10, 1932. He married M. Estelle Elandt Schooley in March, 1990 in Newaygo. He was a self-employed Tool & Die Maker for years until his retirement in 2005. He was a communicant of St. Bartholomew Catholic Church in Newaygo, a member of Croton American Legion #381, Dad’s Post of VFW Post Newaygo and the Stanwood Eagles.

He is survived by his wife Estelle Derwin, his children Donald Derwin of Rhinelander, WI, Cheryl Anderson of Downers Grove, IL, Robin Derwin of Mass City, Brett Derwin of Newaygo, step‑children Lee & Cheryl Schooley of Seattle, WA, Mechelle Jernstadt of Plainwell, Sheri & Vinton Hubbard of Dutton, 5 grandchildren, and his sister Elaine Corbine of Downers Grove, IL. He was preceded in death by his son James in 2009. 

The Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 AM from the St. Bartholomew Catholic Church, Newaygo on Monday, August 23, 2010 with Father Pete Schafer officiating. Interment will be in the St. Bartholomew Cemetery.   Visitation will be held 6‑9 PM Sunday at McKinley Newaygo Chapel and one hour prior to service at the church. Mrs. Evelyn Mae Mouthaan, Age 85 of Grant, died Tuesday, August 10, 2010 at home. She was born Evelyn Mae Woltjer in Grand Rapids, Michigan the daughter of Henrietta (Van Dyke) and Henry Woltjer on February 7, 1925. She married John Robert Mouthaan on July 31, 1947 in Grant, Michigan and he preceded her in death on April 25, 2008. She was a homemaker. She was a member of Grant Christian Reformed Church. She is survived by her daughters Debra & Carl Schuitema of Kent City, Jane & Wayne Chandler of Ravenna, her granddaughter Christina Chandler of Ravenna, her sisters in law MayReta Tibbe of Grant, Audrey & Walter Hodgkinson of Chicago, Emily & Morley Brummel of Fremont, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brothers Chester Woltjer, Edward Woltjer, Robert Woltjer, and her sister Margaret Miller. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM from the Grant Christian Reformed Church on Friday, August 13, 2010 with Pastor Lucas Rodenhouse officiating. Interment in Hillside Cemetery. On Sunday, August 8, 2010, the 325th day of his 93rd year, Alex Orlyk passed on to join his loving wife, Helen Bartlett, his daughter, Elizabeth, his parents, Joseph and Elizabeth (Szlachtycz). And there in heaven, the Lord permitting, he will also join his siblings, Alexander, Stephen (Shelia), Louis (Kay), and Joseph (Mary). He leaves behind his brother, H. Vincent, his son, John (Rose), four grandchildren: Linda (Ray) Riemer, James (Shannon), Douglas, and Steven (Laura), eleven great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild, many nieces and nephews, and his dear friends Paul and Jeanne Yhouse.

Alex was born September 13, 1917 in Troy, NY (North Greenbush Township). He attended Catholic High and Troy High. He graduated from Bowling Green State University in Ohio. Alex served in the United States Army from April 1942 to December 1946 when he was discharged as a First Lieutenant. Alex and Helen made their home in Grand Rapids, until 1992 when they moved to Holland. Always motivated by his experiences, Alex and Helen traveled to various places around the United States and Canada, enjoying the natural beauty, good food, and companionship of others.

Alex will be remembered as a practical, well-read man who had a variety of interests. An avid sports fan, he loved to watch the Michigan college and professional teams and hear the stories of his great-grandchildren’s athletic endeavors. A lover of music, he took great pride in the musical abilities of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A funeral Mass will be said at 11:00 AM, Wednesday, August 11, 2010 at the St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Holland with visitation one hour prior to Mass. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Alex’s name.

Mrs. Rebecca Lynn Vanthof, Age 52 of White Cloud, died Thursday, August 05, 2010 at home. She was born Rebecca Lynn Green in Grand Rapids, Michigan the daughter of Ellen Louise (Henning) and Carl Eugene Green on July 22, 1958. She married Paul Vanthof on June 6, 2002 in Newaygo, Michigan. She was a Homemaker all her life. She is survived by her husband Carl Vanthof of White Cloud, her son Robert & Jessica Green of Grant, 2 grandchildren, her sisters Carla & Jack Christian of Fremont, Donna & Rick Nichols of Twin Lake, Marcia & Mike Hazen of Cedar Springs, Laurie & Howard Christensen of Newaygo. Memorial services will be held at 2:00 PM at the Georgetown Cemetery on Friday, August 6, 2010.

Mrs. Mary E. Oppenhuizen, age 80 of Grant, died Monday, August 2, 2010 at Brookhaven Medical Care Facility in Muskegon.   She was born Mary Ellen Bauder in Scotland, South Dakota the daughter of Edith (Lovins) and Arthur Edward Bauder on January 8, 1930. She married Raymond Floyd Oppenhuizen on May 20, 1949 in Beaver Dam, Michigan. She was a Homemaker all her life and was a member of Grant Reformed Church.      

She is survived by her husband Raymond Oppenhuizen, her sons Ray & Sandy Oppenhuizen, David & Melanie Oppenhuizen all of Grant, her daughter in law Deb Oppenhuizen of Austin, Texas, her grandchildren Nicole & Rick Smith, Lucas Oppenhuizen, Andrew Oppenhuizen, Nathan & Krista Oppenhuizen, Angie Oppenhuizen, Jasmine Oppenhuizen, Luis Oppenhuizen, C. J. Oppenhuizen, her great‑grandchildren Ethan, Jaxson,Talan & Julian, her brothers Ed & Beverly Bauder of Zeeland, Lawrence & Pat Bauder of Montana.  She was preceded in death by her sons Dennis Oppenhuizen, and infant son Oppenhuizen.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM from the Grant Reformed Church, on Friday, August 6, 2010 with Pastor Mik Sutton officiating. Interment will be in Ashland Center Cemetery near Grant.   Visitation will be held 2‑4 & 6‑9 PM Thursday at the Grant Reformed Church.
