Mrs. Pearl Scholtens, Age 67 of Grant, Michigan died Thursday, February 24, 2010 in Grand Rapids. She was born Pearl DeVries in McBain, Michigan the daughter of Jennie (Ellens) and Peter DeVries on November 20, 1942. She married Simon Scholtens on August 30, 1968 in McBain, Michigan. She was a Licensed Practical Nurse for Kelly Services until her retirement. She was a member of Grant Christian Reformed Church. She is survived by her husband Simon (Sam) Scholtens of Grant, her children Daryl & Amy Scholtens of Grant, Debra & Jeff Mersman of Grand Rapids, Stephen & Shannon Scholtens of Cedar Springs, Craig & Kori Scholtens of Zeeland, Jennie & Kris Keegstra of Allendale, 13 grandchildren, her sisters Sena & Ken VanderHeide, Angie & Sherm Postma, Sylvia DeVries, Jane Klumpenhouwer, sisters in law Carolyn DeVries, Alice & Jim Bandstra, brother in law Harry & Connie Scholtens. She was preceded in death by her brothers Harold DeVries, Stephen DeVries, brother in law John Klumpenhouwer. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM from the Grant Christian Reformed Church on Saturday, February 27, 2010 with Pastor Lucas Rodenhouse officiating. Interment in Hillside Cemetery. Visitation will be held 2‑4 & 7‑9 PM Friday at Grant Christian Reformed Church. Mr. Phillip D. Carlson, age 68 of Kent City, died Tuesday, February 23, 2010 at the River St. Home in Whitehall. He was born Phillip Duane Carlson in Sparta, the son of Beatrice Irene (Rolstone) and Arvid Sexton Carlson on April 29, 1941. He married Judith Dell Brock on April 17, 1959 in Bailey. He was a Self‑employed Auto Mechanic for 35 years until his retirement in 1992.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years Judith Carlson, his daughter Julie & Casey Patterson, his sons Tim & Christine Carlson, Noel Carlson all of Kent City, 9 grandchildren and 6 great‑grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 AM from the Bailey Christian Church, on Thursday, February 25, 2010 with Mr. Daren Penwell officiating. Mrs. Geneva Sheldon, Age 99 of Wyoming, died Thursday, February 18, 2010 in Cedar Springs. She was born Geneva Backus in Grant, Michigan the daughter of Fannie (Anderson) and Charles E. Backus on May 10, 1910. She married Forest Bates on July 6, 1926 in Carson City and he preceded her in death on January, 1928. She then married Cecil Sheldon on 1928 in St. Johns and he preceded her in death on August 8, 1965. She was a Homemaker all her life. She is survived by her son Alfred & Orpha Bates of Newaygo, 3 grandchildren, 12 great‑grandchildren, 12 great‑great‑grandchildren, Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM from the McKinley Grant Chapel, Grant on Monday, February 22, 2010 with Mr. Jim Bates officiating. Mrs. Mary Lou Kulczyski, age 70 of Grant, died suddenly Wednesday, February 17, 2010. She was born in Grand Rapids, the daughter of Martha (McGraw) and Carl Vineyard on July 28, 1939. She married Benjamin Kulczyski on May 24, 1974 in Newaygo. She was a employed Ceramics dealer and was a member of Women of the Moose in Belleville.
She is survived by her husband Benjamin Kulczyski, children Keith & Jodi Perkins of Grant, Kelly & James Chilcutt of St. Clair Shores, Benjamin & Christine Kulczyski of Belleville, 11 grandchildren, her sister Juanita & Don Isenhart of Grant. She was preceded in death by son Kevin Perkins.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM from the McKinley Grant Chapel, on Saturday, February 20, 2010 with Pastor Dan Fullmer officiating. Visitation will be held 6‑8 PM Friday.

Mr. Mark Harold Verburg, Age 46 of Newaygo/Croton Twp., Michigan died Monday, February 8, 2010 in Big Rapids. He was born Mark Harold Verburg in Grand Rapids, Michigan the son of Lucy (Guiffra) and Jimmie Verburg on July 30, 1963 in Grand Rapids, Michigan . He married Diane Gallant on April 1, 2000 in Newaygo, Michigan. He was a self employed Plaster/Drywall finisher. He attended Trinity Bible Church in Croton. He was a member of American Legion Post #381 SAL. He is survived by his wife Diane Verburg of Newaygo, his daughter Stephanie Verburg of Detroit, his son Arron & Stephanie Dood of Newaygo, his mother Lucille Varnado of Grand Rapids, step mother Delores Verburg of Stanwood, his siblings Scott Verburg of Grand Rapids, Monica & Ramiro Hernandez of Grand Rapids, Rick & Stephanie Worden of Grand Rapids, Denise Bowen of Stanwood, several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father Jimmie Verburg. Funeral services will be held at the Trinity Bible Church in Croton on Friday, February 12, 2010 at 11:00 am with Pastor Harry Bultema officiating. Mrs. Nellie M. Stevens, aged 88, of Muskegon Hts. and formerly of Grant died Sunday evening in Muskegon. She was born Nellie May Stark May 29, 1921, the daughter of Orah Mae (Whitney) and Albert John Stark in Grant. She married James William Stevens July 20, 1967 in Muskegon and was a member of the Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Muskegon. Mrs. Stevens was a dental assistant for Dr. Robert Christie for 21 years retiring in 1991.
She is survived by her husband James, her daughters Linda VanDenBerg of Florida, Bonnie & Ronald Horrisberger of California, 3 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, her sisters Maurine Stark of Fremont and Evelyn Gilbert of Muskegon.
At Mrs. Stevens request there will be a private family only service with burial in her family plot in Ashland Center Cemetery near Grant. For memorials please consider the Humane Society in your area.
Mr. Moe Campbell, aged 86, of Grant, passed away with his family at his side, Saturday, February 6, 2010. He was born Elmo Levere Campbell May 19, 1923 in Grant, the son of Eva Belle (Johnson) and Arthur Campbell. Moe married Charlotte Jane Vittone January 22, 1952 in South Bend, Indiana. He attended Western State University, Wooster College (Ohio) and St. Mary’s College (California). He served in the US Navy as a pilot during World War II being a graduate of the US Naval Pilot Training Program, being commissioned as a Lieutenant. He was an active businessman in the community for many years establishing Moe’s Hardware in Grant in 1948 retiring in 1989. He also served as Councilman and Mayor of the Village of Grant and was a Life Member of the VFW Post #4249 of Newaygo. Moe was an avid fisherman, hunter and had a passion for flying.
He is survived by his wife Charlotte, his sons David and his wife Joy Campbell of Fremont, Don Campbell of Grand Rapids, his daughter Debra and her husband Charles Swanson of Oakland, CA, , his 4 grandchildren Dan Campbell, Aaron Campbell, Ben Campbell, John Raymond, 2 great-granddaughters, his sisters Lois Muma of Fremont and Thelma McCoy of Grant, sisters and brothers-in-law Eugene & Char Vittone, Pat & Anna Roche, special cousins Mary & Floyd Powell, niece Julianne Vittone, and many other nieces, nephews and cousins. Moe will be greatly missed by his family.
A Celebration of Life will be held later this spring and as a memorial please consider the Fremont Area Community Foundation for the Ashland-Grant Fire Department Endowment Fund, 424 W. 48th St., Fremont, Michigan 49412. The family is being served by the McKinley Funeral Home in Grant.
Mrs. Mary Jane Wiggers, Age 71 of Fremont, formerly of Grant, died Saturday, February 6, 2010 in Fremont. She was born Mary Jane Hollinger in Fremont, Michigan the daughter of Marian Louise (Brown) and Harold James Hollinger on October 12, 1938. She married Darrell Louis Wiggers on December 14, 1985 in Grant. She was an insurance biller for Pine Street Medical Group until 1990. She was a member of Ashland Center Church of Christ. She is survived by her husband Darrell Wiggers of Newaygo, her daughters Stefanie & Dan Kobasic of Bark River, Lori & Luke Vincent of Fremont, 5 grandchildren, 6 brothers in la & sisters in law. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM from the McKinley Funeral Home, Grant Chapel on Tuesday, February 9, 2010 with Mr. Jonathan Greene officiating. Mrs. Beuna Vista Wingo, Age 89 of Newaygo, Michigan, formerly of Cedar Bluff, Virginia, died Thursday, February 4, 2010 in Newaygo. She was born Beuna Vista Hampton in Raven, Virginia the daughter of Sallie Delilah (Spence) and Gordon Scott Hampton on June 7, 1920. She married James Harry Wingo on 1944 in Virginia and he preceded her in death in 1972. She was a cook for Cedar Bluff Elementary until her retirement after 27 years. She is survived by her grandchildren Robert Stray, Jr. of Newaygo, MI; James & Janice Stray of Meredosia, IL; Susie & Tim Shepherd of Richlands, VA; Donna Stray of Newaygo; Dawn & Wes Houghton of Stanwood; two step grandchildren Mike & Mark Arntz; 6 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her son James H. Wingo, Jr. in 1982 and her daughter Sally M. Stray in 1990. Graveside funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM at the Oak Grove Cemetery, Newaygo, Michigan on Monday, February 8, 2010 with Mr. Jonathan Greene officiating. Esther L. Abrahams (Brummel), 80, of Grand Rapids passed away peacefully on February 4, 2010. Esther was born March 26, 1929 in Grand Rapids and lived in Grant, Michigan where she raised her family with her former husband, Harry Abrahams, who preceded her in death. Esther was a retired employee of Thermotron in Holland, Michigan. Esther is survived by four of her six children, Dennis Abrahams of Casnovia, Kevin Abrahams (John Kraklau) of Grand Rapids, Cindy Abrahams-Bankes of Aransas Pass, Texas, Sheila Abrahams (Ted Hitchcock) of South Haven, four grandchildren Allen (Erica) Abrahams of Chicago, Andrea (Jose) Garza of Grand Rapids, Gregory Sall of Georgia and Stacey Sall of Italy, 2 great grandchildren Jose Garza Jr. and Christina Garza. She was preceded in death by an infant daughter Christine Abrahams, a daughter Loraine Sall and a brother Lloyd Brummel. Esther is also survived by sisters Bernice (Howard) Pell of Fremont, Lavon (Edwin) Visscher of Holland, brothers Morley (Emily) Brummel of Fremont, Robert (Joyce) Brummel of Fremont, Stanley (Marcia) Brummel of Pierson, and Clyde (Denise) Brummel of Fremont. Memorial contributions can be made to Holland Home, Fulton Manor-Lendick Unit in Grand Rapids. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, February 6 at McKinley Funeral Home, Grant.
