Mr. Ricky Eldred, Age 22 of Grant, died Friday, May 22, 2009 at home. He was born Richard Wayne Eldred, II in Omaha, Nebraska the son of Tina Marie (Hood) and Richard Wayne Eldred on July 14, 1986. He is survived by his mother Tina & Donald Ingell of Grant, his sister Tiffany Miles of Holland, his brother Danny Eldred of Baltimore, MD, his step sisters Danielle & Jason Garlacz of Newaygo, Lindsey & Chris Crisman of Grant, his nieces Kayla & Serenity, his nephew Caiden, and his grandmother Marie Hood of Grant. He was preceded in death by his father Richard Wayne Eldred

Mrs. Betty Jane Heiss, Age 78 of Grant, died Friday, May 22, 2009 in Casnovia Twp. She was born Betty Jane Schoonmaker in Morley, Michigan the daughter of Lola (Cooper) and Louis Schoonmaker on July 8, 1930. She married Arnold Edgar Heiss on November 5, 1946 in Sand Lake. She was a spray painter for Keeler Brass for 13 years. She is survived by her husband: Arnold Heiss of Grant, her daughters Char & Jack Alexander of Tazewell, GA, Jackie & Jerry Tompkins of Ravenna, her son Rocky & Pat Heiss of Grant, 6 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, 4 great great grandchildren, and her sister Bernice Schoonmaker of Cedar Springs. She was preceded in death by her son Edward Heiss in 1964. Graveside funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM at the Idlewild Cemetery near Kent City on Tuesday, May 26, 2009 with Pastor Eric Harvey officiating. Memorial services will be held at Resurrection Life Church in Newaygo at 1:00 PM.

Mrs. Margaret Lucille MacDermid, Age 87 of Grand Rapids, Michigan died Wednesday, May 19, 2009 in Grand Rapids. She was born Margaret Lucille McKinlay in Grant, Michigan the daughter of Erma (Stanton) and Ebert A. McKinlay on July 23, 1921. She married Roger John MacDermid on November 5, 1942 in Rucker, Alabama and he preceded her in death on January 30, 1987. She was a homemaker. Memorial services will be announced later.
Beatrice D. Sibley, aged 79 years, died suddenly at home on Saturday, May 16, 2009. She was the daughter of the late Douglas W. Sibley and Dorothy M. Sibley, who preceded her in death. Her mother was a retired rural school teacher for Newaygo County Schools.
Surviving Beatrice is her sister, Dorothy A. Sibley. Beatrice and Dorothy lived with their parents in Detroit, and were Detroit Public School teachers. Beatrice taught kindergarten for 36 years and Dorothy taught elementary and middle school grades for 38 years. After retiring, Bea and Dorothy built their new home on 80 acres near Newaygo.
Beatrice had many interests such as cooking, sewing, crafts, reading and she was an excellent pianist. She belonged to the Michigan Botanical Club and was an officer on the White Pine Chapter MBC. She was an officer in the Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel. She was very active in the Newaygo United Methodist Church in Sunday School and in the United Methodist Church Women. Bea was a member and an officer of the national honor society for educators, Pi Lambda Theta. Bea enjoyed traveling throughout the world, and stayed in 47 different countries during her lifetime. Seeing the United States and Canada was always something she enjoyed while attending summer sessions in many universities in the U.S.A.
George and Pamela Cronk are her cousins who have helped her so much during the years. Janet Montaya, Lysandra Montoya, Amanda Graham and Yesenia Montoya have been our private care-givers for Bea this last year, and have helped Bea during her illness.
Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, May 20, 2009 at 11:00 am at the Newaygo United Methodist Church, with Rev. Patricia Bromberek officiating. Visitation will be at the McKinley Funeral Home, Newaygo Chapel on Tuesday 2-4 & 7-9 pm. There will also be visitation at the church the hour prior to the funeral service. Memorials may be sent to the First Responders of Newaygo, who have come so many times to help Bea.
Mr. Carl C. Salacina, Age 77 of Newaygo, died Saturday, May 16, 2009 at home. He was born Carl C. Salacina in Muskegon, Michigan the son of Anna (Sokolowski) and Carl Salacina on September 20, 1931. He married Arlene Ruth Ensing in 1951 in Fremont. He was a Supervisor for Sand Mold Systems and Newaygo Engineering Co. until his retirement in 1986. He was a member of Newaygo United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife Arlene Salacina of Newaygo, his sons Leslie & Jodi Salacina of Newaygo, Dale & Marilyn Salacina of Newaygo, his grandchildren Theresa & Ken Leseman, John & Christina Salacina, Laura Salacina, 6 great grandchildren, his brothers Henry Salacina of Saginaw, Lloyd & Peggy Salacina of Croton, his sisters Betty & Delbert Neibarger of Newaygo, Joy Barton of Fremont, Ruby Kuhns of Newaygo. He was preceded in death by his brothers Charles Salacina, Adolph Salacina, his sister Rosie Hansel. Memorial services will be held Monday, May 18, 2009 at 11:00 am from the Newaygo United Methodist Church with Pastor Patricia Bromberek officiating. Mrs. Thelma Velona Laurence, Age 98 of Grant, died Friday, May 15, 2009 in Grant. She was born Thelma Velona in Bridgeton, Michigan the daughter of Mabel (Wheaton) and John Albert Ruggles on June 27, 1910. She married Walter G. Laurence on July 7, 1934 in Indiana and he preceded her in death on January 14, 1970. She was the owner/operator of Laurence Trucking in Muskegon until 1980. She was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Fremont. She was an avid bowler, a member of the Muskegon Business Club and a life member of Mona Lake Boating Club. She is survived by her niece and nephews Miriam & Don Strohpaul of Newaygo, Harold & Jean Sterk of St. Ignace, Richard Sterk of St. Ignace, her great nephews Daniel & Sheri Scott and Brian & Pamela Scott. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM from the McKinley Funeral Home Grant Chapel on Monday, May 18, 2009 with The Rev. Mary Frens officiating. Interment in Lakeside Cemetery, Muskegon. Mr. William Ray Brock, Age 66 of Newaygo, died Friday, May 8, 2009 in Newaygo. He was born William Ray Brock in Cariville, Tennessee the son of Glennis (Silcox) and Arlie Brock on August 17, 1942. He married Dawn Saxton on February 10, 1986 in Grant. He was a truck driver/mechanic for Vander Wall Brothers Construction until 2005. He is survived by his wife Dawn Brock of Newaygo, his children James Brock of Grant, Marchell & Harold Elliott of White Cloud, Roxann Franklin of Kentwood, Marvin & Colleen Brock of Jackson, Pamela & Craig Hughes of Muskegon, Patricia Smith of Fremont, 16 Grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, his sisters Betty Crowley of LaFollette, TN, Loretta & Ron Jacobs of Boyne City, Deanna & Ray Wheeler of Belleville, Jewel & James Leach of LaFollette, TN, Debbie Chitwood of LaFollette, TN, his brothers Leonard & Patsy Brock of LaFollette, TN, Junior & Loretta Brock of Huntsville Co., TN, Timmy & Tammy Brock of LaFollette, TN and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. LaVerne Jorgensen, Age 97 of Grant, died Friday, May 8, 2009 in Fremont. She was born LaVerne Stark in Casnovia Township, Michigan the daughter of Ora (Whitney) and Albert Stark on September 13, 1911. She married Herman Jorgensen on July 12, 1933 in Indiana and he preceded her in death on January 5, 1999. She was a baker for Osterby’s Bakery. She was a former member of the Ashland Ladies Aid. She is survived by her children Lewis & Laura Jorgensen of Ft. Worth, TX, Maurice & Lavern Jorgensen of Bailey, Donald & Shelley Jorgensen of Ravenna, Patsy & Jerry Throop of Grant, Lester & Ellin Jorgensen of Newaygo, 12 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, 4 great great grandchildren,her sisters Evelyn Gilbert of Muskegon, Nellie & Jim Stevens of Muskegon and Maurine Stark of Fremont. Ms. Geraldine Berends, Age 62 of Sand Lake and lifetime of Newaygo County, died Monday, May 4, 2009 in Grand Rapids. She was born Geraldine Berends in Vanderbilt, Michigan the daughter of Whillimina (Cole) and Cecil Berends on January 22, 1947.
She is survived by her sister Rosemary & Albert McGuire of Grand Rapids, her brother Cecil Berends, Jr. of Flint, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her twin sister Georgia Ann Berends and her sister Josephine Alldaffer.
