Mr. Richard H. Ferner, age 82 of Grant, died Tuesday, April 28, 2009 at his home in Ashland Township.   He was born Richard Herman Ferner in Jamestown, Michigan the son of Amelia (Schnieder) and William John Ferner on November 3, 1926. He married Hilda Calista Manning on May 12, 1945 in Fayetteville, North Carolina. He was a Supervisor for Kelvinator‑White Consolidated Industries, Inc. until his retirement. He was veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Army.

He is survived by his wife Hilda Ferner, his children Richard & Glenda Ferner of Ft. White, FL, Sharon & Timothy Kamphuis of Sparta, Linda & Joseph Reckenwald of Clearwater, FL, Ted & Collette Ferner of Pittsburg, PA, 11 grandchildren, 8 great‑grandchildren, his brothers Edward & Jane Ferner of Wyoming, William Ferner of Newaygo. Richard was preceded in death by his son Michael in 1971. At Richard’s request cremation has taken place.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 AM from the McKinley Grant Chapel, on Monday, May 4, 2009 with Father Tom Boufford officiating. Graveside services will be held 10:30 AM, Tuesday, May 5, 2009 at the St. Sebastian Cemetery in Byron Center with Msgr. William Duncan officiating. Mr. Eusebio Olvera Gonzalez, Age 74 of Fremont, formerly of Newaygo and Grant, died Friday, April 24, 2009 in Fremont.  He was born Eusebio Olvera Gonzalez in Edinburg, Texas the son of Margarita (Olvera) and Jose Alberto Gonzalez on December 16, 1934.  He married Maria Castro on November 22, 1959 in Laredo, Texas and she preceded him in death on March 20, 2001. He was a truck driver for Dennen Steel in Walker and Marvin Deur in White Cloud until his retirement in 1992.  He was a member of St. Bartholomew Catholic Church in Newyago and Our Lady of Guadalupe Mission in Grant.  He was a member of Teamsters Local #406. He is survived by his children Gerardo, Sr. & Julie Gonzalez of Grant, Maria & John Hawk of Allegan, Rosa Anna Gonzalez of Grant, Juan Gonzalez of Athens, 10 grandchidlren, his sisters Dominga Contreras of Mission, TX, Santos Leal of Grant, her brother Juan & Lupita Gonzalez of Edinburg, TX, several nieces and nephews, he was preceded in death by his brother Cosme Leal, and his sisters Josefina Leal and Tomasa Leal‑Hernandez. Mrs. Maria Felicita Flores, Age 89 of Fremont, formerly of Grant, died Tuesday, April 21, 2009 near Fremont. She was born Maria Felicita Morquecho in Laredo, Texas the daughter of Julia (Morquecho) and Francisco Sotelo on March 03, 1920. She married Alfredo Flores on May 10, 1948 in Laredo, Texas and he preceded her in death on October 5, 1997. She was a Homemaker all her life. She was a member of St. Bartholomew Catholic Church. She is survived by her daughter San Juanita & Jose Decristobal of Grand Rapids, her grandchildren Kenneth Lancaster of Grand Rapids, Mary & Steven Gibson of Fremont, Howard Lancaster of Rockford, Lorri & Hector Maldonado of Grand Rapids, and 5 great‑grandchildren. Mr. Arthur Hyma, age 87 of Newaygo, died Wednesday, April 22, 2009 at Fountianview Retirement Village in Grant. He was born Arthur Hyma in Grant, the son of Emma (Syswerda) and Herman Hyma on February 27, 1922. He married Susanna Jeanette Hilbrand on January 16, 1942 in Grant and she preceded him in death on November 14, 2003. He was a self employed Vegetable farmer, a member of Grant Reformed Church, and a former President of Brooks Lake Association. He was a veteran having served in the Army during World War II from March 27, 1945 to August 31, 1946 when he was discharged as a TEC 5.

He survived by his children James & Diane Hyma of Casper, WY, Bruce & Judy Hyma of Grant, Dan & Joni Hyma of Ada, Kathy Hyma of Walker, Lori & Lance Vandever, Randy Hyma all of Grant, 16 grandchildren, 9 great‑grandchildren, 2 gr.‑gr.‑grandchildren, his brother Marvin & Jacqline Hyma of Grand Blanc. He was also preceded in death by son Dale Hyma September 26, 1997, daughter‑in‑law Carol Hisey Hyma November 30, 2005, and his sister Edith Cunningham. 

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM from the Grant Reformed Church, on Monday, April 27, 2009 with Pastor Steve VanderWest officiating. Interment will be in the Hillside Cemetery near Grant. Mr. John Allen Orman, Age 31 of Holland, formerly of Newaygo, died Wednesday, April 17, 2009 in Holland. He was born John Allen Orman in Grand Rapids, Michigan the son of Susan Coffman and Willis Orman on May 16, 1977. He married Teresa Brenner on May 24, 2002 in White Cloud. He is survived by his wife Teresa Orman of Holland, his children Scott Heney and Caitlyn Orman of Holland, his mother Susan Coffman of White Cloud, his sister Amy & Joe Applegate of Bitely and his brother Roger Orman of White Cloud and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Patricia June Smith, Age 82 of Woodview Apartments, Newaygo for the past 16 years died Monday, April 20, 2009 in Fremont. She was born Patricia June Impens in Grand Rapids, Michigan the daughter of Lena (Van Akkeren) and William Impens on June 20, 1926. She married Richard C. Smith and he preceded her in death. She and her husband owned the Hilltop Grocery at Hardy Dam until 1971.   She was a member of the Walter Howarth American Legion Post #381 Auxiliary for 25 continuous years. She is survived by her daughters Barbara & David Beebe of Newaygo, Beverly & John Brazil of Tehachapica, CA, her son Daivd & Mindi Smith of Rock Springs, TN, 6 grandchildren, and 3 great‑grandchildren. Mrs. Elaine Effie Purdy, Age 72 of Fremont, formerly of Newaygo, died Monday, April 20, 2009 in Fremont. She was born Elaine Effie Schooley in Muskegon, Michigan the daughter of Lillian (Berry) and William Schooley on August 1, 1936.  She was a homemaker all her life.  She was a member of Newaygo United Methodist Church where she did a lot of crafting and work for the church. She is survived by her children Carol & Roy Taylor of Newaygo, Laurie & Larry Jones of White Cloud, Dale Purdy of Grand Rapids, 8 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, her siblings Frank & Arlene Schooley of Caledonia, Sandra & Leon Zaffer of Lockport, Doris & Lloyd Hoffmeyer of Muskegon, Dan & Judy Schooley of Holton, Helen & Larry Jenkins of Adrian, Diane & Ken Ketola of Tecumseh and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Tom E. Brant, aged 65, of Grant, died suddenly Monday April 13, 2009 at his residence near Grant. He married Lois Jean Stoll Beach October 5, 1995 in White Cloud. He born Tom Edward Brant March 28, 1944 in Mt. Pleasant, the son of Marion May (Schauppner) and Corvan Edward Brant. Tom graduated from Grant High School in 1961 and went to work for his dad at the family owned Shell gas station in Grant. After that closed he went to work at Duffy Motts near Bailey and then went up north to Cherry Growers in Buckley and then was the owner/operator of the Bridgeton General Store for 16 years retiring in 1996. He attended many training schools when employed by American Brands & Beatrice Foods for management, personnel, and safety training. He cared for his mother until she passed away.

He is survived by: his wife Jean Brant, his step‑children Shelly Brott, Sherry Waldo, Shelia & Bill Maginity all of Ravenna, Rick & Gloria Beach of Greenville, Luanne & Clyde Meneffe of Cedar Springs, Karen & Steve Evink of Casnovia,  Dave Beach & Brenda Kenney of Grant, Jeff Beach of Grand Rapids, several step‑grandchildren & step‑great‑grandchildren,  his sister Judy & Bill Bond of Newbern, NC, his brothers & sisters‑in‑law Richard Swanson of Grant, Bert & Russell Rogers of Indiana, Jacky Moore of Grand Rapids, Larry & Robyn Stoll of Rockford, Lorayne Stoll of Grand Rapids. He was preceded in death by his parents C.E. "Dutch" & Marion Brant and his sister Kay Swanson.

usa_sm_halfm2 Mr. James Sidney Besemer, Age 88 of Newaygo, died Friday, April 10, 2009 in Fremont. He was born James Sidney Besemer in Onaway, Michigan the son of Goldie (Webber) and Raymond D. Besemer on December 22, 1920. He married Evelyn Porter on August 10, 1946 in Onaway and she preceded him in death on 1967. He then married Mary Burpee on in Wayland and she preceded him in death on . He was a Trim Cutter for GM (Fisher Body) until his retirement in 1982.   He was a former member of the Florida CCC. He is survived by his children Charlotte & Ron Lampen of Hamilton, John Besemer of Pentwater, Sally Cooper of Newaygo, Jim Besemer of Gratton, Robert & Cathy Besemer of Belmont, Patricia & Fredric Bingman of Newaygo, Roxanne Trompen of Newaygo, Christine Drake of St. Louis, MO,  Patricia & Dick Marvin of Saranac, Dale & Jackie Burpee of Grayling, Susan Carrigan of Lowell, Ronald Burpee of Grayling, several grandchildren and great grandchildren. Mr. Hugh P. Meadows, aged 66, of Grant, died Wednesday, April 8, 2009 at Spectrum Health Services – Butterworth Campus.  He was born Hugh Parker Meadows August 8, 1942 in Charleston, West Virginia the son of Flossie Jerel (Oiler) and Charles Lee Meadows.  Mr. Meadows was a member of the Grant Wesleyan Church and truck driver for 15 years retiring in 1991.

He is survived by his sons Glen, Daniel, Robby, Jimmy and his grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held 10 AM Wednesday, April 15, 2009 at the Grant Wesleyan Church with Pastor Chilo officiating.  Interment is in the Parkview Cemetery in Grant.  For memorials please consider his 18 year old son Glen.  The Meadows family were served by the McKinley Funeral Home – Grant Chapel.
